Separate margins from gaps
The total width includes the stripes, both outer margins and the internal gaps. Five stripes create four gaps. Left and right margins may differ; they are not automatically replaced by another gap.
Mark from the same edge
Starts, ends and centres are all measured from the left edge of the whole area. Marking every position from this same reference avoids accumulating small rounding differences. The diagram shows the layout without choosing a stripe height.
Check the available space
Margins and gaps must leave a positive width for the stripes. A single stripe has no internal gap. The tool does not account for an existing pattern, surface irregularities or masking tape thickness.
Stripe width = [total width − left margin − right margin − (number of stripes − 1) × gap] ÷ number of stripes.
Five stripes between two margins
Across 240 cm, two 10 cm margins and four 4 cm gaps leave 204 cm. Each stripe is 40.8 cm wide. Starts are at 10, 54.8, 99.6, 144.4 and 189.2 cm. The last stripe ends at 230 cm, before the 10 cm right margin.
Details to check
- Identify the left edge of the whole area precisely.
- Check the last edge against the right margin.
- Use the same measuring method for every stripe.
Frequently asked questions
Do both margins have to be equal?
No. They are entered separately to adapt the pattern to furniture, an edge or an asymmetric layout.
Is a zero gap allowed?
Yes. The stripes then touch. With only one stripe, the gap field has no effect because two stripes are needed to form a gap.
