Separate width from overhang
The finished width is the width you want for the strip: it does not automatically cover the whole table. Overhang is added only at the two ends. Measure the table in its actual configuration, including any extensions you will use.
Allow for the folded fabric
The allowance per edge is the total amount of fabric taken up by the hem. For two 1 cm folds, enter 2 cm. This allowance is added twice to each dimension. Use the prepared fabric width, after any washing and with the selvedges excluded.
Understand the row layout
The tool places the piece widths side by side in the fabric without rotating them. An incomplete final row still uses one full cutting length. The purchase is rounded up to 10 cm; pattern matching, shrinkage and an allowance for mistakes are not added.
Finished length = table length + 2 × overhang. Cut dimensions = finished dimensions + 2 × hem allowance. Pieces per row = whole-number part of fabric width ÷ cut width. Fabric length = number of rows × cut length ÷ 100.
Two runners for a 180 cm table
With a 20 cm overhang and a finished width of 35 cm, each runner measures 220 × 35 cm. A 2 cm allowance on each edge gives a cut size of 224 × 39 cm. A 140 cm fabric width fits three pieces: the two runners need one row, or 2.24 m before rounding and 2.30 m after rounding.
Details to check
- Mark the pattern direction before cutting.
- Check the increments in which the fabric is sold.
- Use the tablecloth calculator to cover the whole table.
Frequently asked questions
Can I join two narrower strips?
This model makes each piece from a single section of fabric. Joining strips requires a different layout and extra seam allowances.
Is the fabric rotated to reduce the length needed?
No. The direction stays fixed so that the pattern and layout remain clear. Compare a different layout separately if your fabric allows it.
